Common Questions Reborners are asked:
What kind of dolls can be reborned? The dolls that are the most commonly reborned are Berenguer dolls www.jctoys.com and you will see a plethora of them for sale on Ebay. The dolls that are bringing more money that are reborned are the Zapf, Lee Middleton - Reva Schick and Eva Helland, Ashton Drake - Linda Webb, and other sculptor's dolls. We carry the Ashton Drake and the Berenguer (Special Edition and La Babies), also Lee Middleton - rare, discontinued and also the full line of current baby dolls.
Other dolls can be reborn - Berjusa, Shelton, Pat Moulton, Apple Valley, Cititoy and just about any doll that is vinyl that has good quality vinyl with nice detailing and looks realistic.
What materials are used to weight reborn babies? We use polyfil and poly pellets as they are easy to work with and sterile. Sand can be used to weight the limbs - some countries will stop the dolls at the border for irradiation or return.
How do I color the dolls? There are a number of products that are used to color the dolls to make them appear more lifelike. Whatever products you use, make sure that they are permanent and will not damage the vinyl over time. Use the internet to find websites and groups about reborning to educate yourself. Find dolls you like and ask the reborner who created the baby if they will share their techniques.
Do I put more than one layer of acrylic paint on the inside of the doll and what happens if the paint inside flakes off? Only one coat is necessary - it is the transference of the pigment in the paint to the vinyl that is desirable, it is not the layer of paint itself that you are interested in and another layer won't make any difference. The stain of the paint into the vinyl is what makes the change in coloring so even if the paint flakes off when dry it doesn't matter, the stain is there and makes the baby have a nice skin tone
How do I attach eyelashes to my baby doll? Put tiny beads of glue or run a thin line of glue on the base of the lashes with a dental pick and then carefully lay the eyelash edge starting at one side and laying it down in a rolling motion to the other side of the lash. Never try putting the eyelashes on by simply putting the entire lash down at one time, there would be glue smeared on the eye.
I don’t want to open my baby’s nostrils, what else can I do to make baby look more real around the nose? Adora of www.sweetdreamsbabies.com had this suggestion: Paint the nostrils with a tiny brush in dark brown oil paint (no medium, just straight color), use Winsor & Newton burnt umber. In case you need to correct the nostrils, use a q-tip.
A site I am on has the right click disabled so I can’t copy the pictures to refer to. How can I get around the disabled right click? I only want to look at the pictures to try to get better at reborning and don’t want to use the picture for anything else. To get around the right click all anyone has to do is click on VIEW at the top of the browser page in IE, and click on SOURCE and it will show all the HTML (computer language) that makes up the page, then click on EDIT and FIND then type in JPG and it will show you all the picture links. You might want to look for GIF as well, but usually the pictures are JPG. Cut and paste the http://www.grandmothersattic.net/assets/images/ecrudress_sm.jpeg or whatever URL you find into another open browser window and VIOLA you have the picture. Right click on the picture and COPY to paste into your email or right click and SAVE AS to your hard drive.
However, It is not nice to take other folks pictures without their permission, so if folks have the right click feature disabled on their pages please consider emailing the website owner and ask if they would mind sending you the picture you are interested in.
Is Acetone the best to remove factory paint? Won't this deteriorate the vinyl? Are there other options? The acetone should never be left to stand on the vinyl, use it with a cotton ball and swipe once or you will put the paint back on with the second swipe. The acetone simply removes the paint and harmlessly evaporates. However, if you don't want to use acetone, there is Goof Off cleaner. If acetone is allowed to stand on the vinyl and soak in, it will change the composition of the vinyl and make baby shiny and unable to take paint. After you have removed the paint, give the doll baking soda bath to neutralize the acetone and then a hot soapy bath in the kitchen sink with dish detergent.
If you accidentally drip acetone on the doll or use too much, boil the baby's head in a pot for 20 minutes and then give baby a baking soda bath to try to undo the damage. If there is just a shiny drip area, use fine wet/dry sandpaper to rub the spot lightly - you will be amazed how easy and quickly the spot disappears. Sometimes the dolls arrive from the factory with a shiny rub spot on their faces from shipping. Use very fine sandpaper to remove the shiny spot. Rubbing alcohol will also allow paint to adhere if you have a problem after you have used acetone on the vinyl and paint won’t stick.
